The Kos Ishii Fellowship Fund has been established. The family would prefer contributions to this fund in lieu of flowers or other gifts. In the words of James Plummer, Dean of Stanford Engineering:
"I write on behalf of the Stanford School of Engineering to express our sincere sadness at the loss of our colleague and friend, Kos Ishii. He will be missed by faculty, staff, and students across the University. His keen interest in understanding how things work, and then figuring out how to make them work better, made him the quintessential engineer. His love of working with others to help them understand how things work, and how to make them work better, made him the quintessential teacher. He was a remarkable engineer and a remarkable teacher. Most of all, he was a remarkable man. We will miss his quick smile, his deep kindness, and his generous spirit.
The bond between faculty and students is very special, and Kos built incredible ties with his mentors and his students. To honor these relationships and his many contributions to engineering education, the Mechanical Engineering Department and the School of Engineering have created the Kos Ishii Fellowship Fund to support graduate students in mechanical engineering, with a preference for students focused on product design. The School and the Mechanical Engineering Department will allocate $250,000 to an endowment for this purpose and we welcome additional contributions to the fund. The fellowship will exist in the perpetuity and be a way that Kos and his memory will play a vital role in the education of future engineers. We believe that is a most fitting way to recognize our friend and colleague."
Details on contributing to this fund:
An endowed fellowship fund has been established at Stanford to honor the memory of Kos Ishii, who served on the engineering faculty for 15 years. Gifts to the fund are welcome and will support graduate students in mechanical engineering. The fund will support tuition, stipends, assistantships, and other expenses for graduate students, with a preference for students interested in product design.
